Pamukkale & Hierapolis Day Trip from Izmir

A Day at the “Cotton Castle”

If you are staying in Izmir and want to see something truly unique, a trip to Pamukkale is a must. Most people know it for the famous white terraces, but there is a lot more to the story. It’s about a 4-hour drive from Izmir, but we make sure the ride is comfortable and easy. At Puerto Travel, we pick you up right from your door and handle all the driving, so you can just sit back and watch the Aegean countryside roll by.

What to Expect When you get there, the first thing that hits you is how white everything is—it really does look like a castle made of cotton. But once you look past the water, you’ll find the ruins of Hierapolis. This wasn’t just any ancient city; it was a famous health center in Roman times because of the thermal springs. For those interested in religious history, we also visit the Martyrium of St. Philip, which is a very powerful spot hidden away from the main crowds.

  • Pick-up (08:00): We’ll come to your hotel in Izmir early in the morning. Since it’s a bit of a drive, we like to get a head start to beat the midday heat.
  • Arrival & Lunch: Once we reach the Denizli area, we’ll stop for a proper local lunch. No rushed sandwiches—we want you to try some real Aegean food before we start exploring.
  • Walking through Hierapolis: We’ll walk through the Necropolis (one of the biggest ancient cemeteries in Turkey) and the massive Roman Theater. Your guide will tell you the stories behind these stones, so it’s not just a walk through ruins.
  • The Pool of Cleopatra: This is a fan favorite. You can actually swim in a thermal pool filled with original Roman columns that fell in during an earthquake. It’s like swimming in a piece of history. (Note: Entrance to the water is an extra fee, but even just sitting by the pool is very relaxing).
  • The Travertines: We’ll save some time for the white terraces. You can take your shoes off and walk through the warm mineral water. It’s the best spot for photos, so make sure your phone is charged!
  • Heading Back: Around 16:00, we’ll start the drive back to Izmir. We can drop you at your hotel, or if you’re flying out that night, we can take you straight to Izmir Airport (ADB) to save you the hassle of finding a taxi.
